The origins of ‘record is re as ‘again’ and cord meaning ‘heart’.
To record is to take through the heart again.

I am creating
a life-long library of memory records. Each side contains a unique
sound, it is an image processed into audio data, becoming an object that
holds a memory. The image is a transfer of a specific site,
meditatively recorded through charcoal rubbing. The images are overlaid
twice to create a topological engraving on the disc. Image determines
the valleys and craters of the record (groove depth) which a vinyl
needle processes into sound. Threads (spirals) are also hand-etched,
dictating the length of the track. How much of the memory is remembered
relies upon how preserved and complex the image and spiral track are.
Data such as time, date, location, temperature, subject, and an intimate
inner monologue are incorporated into the records album packaging.
Memories
are always in flux, to record them in any way requires data loss,
mutation, corruption. I intend to remember deeply through the process of
recording. The record is an amulet for sentimentality, a conduit for
memory. The more it is played (remembered) and touched (shared) by
others, the more damaged and altered the memory becomes. The records are
the result of an attempt to preserve my life’s ephemeral and temporary
moments. They exist to process the things my heart cannot bear to let
go; not that it is forever. May it last a little longer in my hands
instead of the heart.
